And the Word of the Lord says:

4 “Gideon,” the Lord said, “you still have too many soldiers. Take them down to the spring and I’ll test them. “I’ll tell you which ones can go with you and which ones can go back home.” 5 When Gideon led his army down to the spring, the Lord told him, “Watch how each man gets a drink of water. Then divide them into two groups- those that lap the water like a dog and those who kneel down to drink.” 6 Three hundred men scooped up water in their hands and lapped it, and the rest knelt to get a drink. 7 The Lord said, “Gideon, your army will be made up of everyone who lapped the water from their hands. Send the others home. I’m going to rescue Israel by helping you and your army of three hundred defeat the Midianites.” – Judges 7:4-7 CEV

As a little girl, I used to hear my mother say we are to watch, as well as pray. I knew how to pray; but, what did I need to watch? As I got older, I realized that not only was there a lot to pray for or about but a truckload of things we need to be on the watch for as well.

In the book of Luke 21:36, Jesus told His disciples to always be on watch and pray to be able to escape all that was about to happen so they would be able to stand before the Son of Man. In Matthew 26:41 and Mark 14:38, they both tell us to watch and pray so we don’t fall into temptation – because the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Watch – to be careful or cautious; to keep awake, especially for a purpose; remain vigilant, as for protection or safekeeping; to keep vigil for a devotional purpose; to keep guard!

I can only imagine the 300 lappers in Gideon’s army. Not only did they get refreshed from the water in their hands so that they could endure to the end, but they also had a clear view to see, so they could watch for anything coming at them! This is beautiful, as I am seeing a God-designed weapon (us) that has a clear shot at its target. A weapon that is charged and refueled and given power by the refreshing water we drink – which comes from the Living Water – that secures our victory in whatever we come up against!

NO WEAPON THAT IS FORMED AGAINST US SHALL PROSPER, IN JESUS’ NAME!

We are being called upon to be on the watch for what the enemy is releasing. We don’t have to worry about whether we are capable of the Watch Call. All we have to be is willing to surrender to whatever the instructions are for us, from our King, and our eyes will instantaneously be quickened to the sharpness of the Eagle’s Eye! “Where are My eagles?” says the Lord!

ABBA,

OPEN! OPEN! OPEN our eyes that we may see what You want us to see! We are here waiting at Your feet for Your instruction. Have Your way in us. We submit and surrender to You and You alone. There is none like You! We are Yours – ready, willing, and able to do what You have called us to do in this hour. We are available to be replenished and are watching with our hearts, ready to engage. We rejoice in NO weapon prospering against us because You are our weapon! We will sing, dance, and marvel at the defeat of our adversary, and rejoice in You our LORD GOD! We will soar over the enemy’s camp and zero in with Eagles Eyes on our target because You are living on the inside of us!

We are Yours and we are ready to WATCH as well as pray.

In Jesus Name,

Amen
